My theology, being driven very much by my training in the hard sciences, tends to be head-focused, and suppresses my understanding of the Messiah on an emotional level. I’m engaging in spiritual triage, perhaps, and distancing myself from the moments of deepest emotional vulnerability in order to keep functioning in the face of the great needs I see all around me and my inability to protect my people from consequences they do not see or cannot control.

I know that theological interpretations must extrapolate well to cosmic scales to be correct — not just to the 3000 or so years of the Judeo-Christian tradition. This helps me remember that cosmic scales aren’t just measured in light years or eons, but in heights of promise and depths of despair.
